J. L. recalls, "He and Dilly had one son, Jean or Gene, I'm not sure of the spelling. They always had a stud horse and fox hounds, that is why they are often pictured with both. As a young boy, my daily rounds included the Essery Blacksmith Shop in Cape Fair. Jim & I got along very well, and I occassionally was invited to their house and the noon meal which often included "squab", fried young pidgeons, which the Esserys raised in their pidgeon boxes around the barn."
