Sophie Jane (Berry) Payne  was born on November 18, 1840 to Francis P. Berry and Nancy Menerva (Gideon) Berry who at the time lived in Stone County Missouri. Her husband was James Payne.

According to Steve Cox the photo of Sophie appeared in an article titled "Ozark Memories" and it is believed that the picture was submitted by Mr. and Mrs. Jess Graham.
