Abe was first cousin to Levi Stephens, brother to Thersa Stephens Butler, and uncle to Clarence O. "Mote" Butler.  Alma Tilden Stephens was a cousin to Bertha Mae Tilden Butler, wife of Charley Butler.

The Stephens brothers who settled around Galena, Missouri were Phillip (father of Abe, Thersa Stephens Butler, Ester, and Nancy Stephens Smith - grandmother of Cecil "Buck" Smith of Stone County), David (father of Nancy, George, James, William, John, Sarah and David) and Josiah (father of Bennett, William, Ruth, Charles, Tilford, Levi, Andrew, Joseph, John, Elizabeth). Phillip, David, and Josiah were all born in AR Territory.
