Samuel Smyth was born in Indiana in 1823. He died sometime after 1900. He was married to Martha McGuire who was born in 1832 in Missouri. She died after 1880 and before 1900.
Samuel arrived in Stone County prior to 1866. He was a
Veteran of the Civil War. Samuel was a member of Company H 15th Regiment
Missouri Volunteer Cavalry. He applied for and received a Disability Pension
in 1891.
He appears in the 1870 Census for Stone County Flat Creek
Township with wife Martha, daughter Rachel, son Jeremiah and a house servant.
Also listed are four Roberts children. By the 1800 census the Roberts children
as well as Jeremiah were missing and no trace of them has been found. They
could have been children of a prior marriage of Martha or the children
of Samuel or Martha's siblings, which they took in. Photos courtesy of
